Scripture focus on Job Chapter 2
So, Job is persecuted by Satan in the Book of Job. Here are some details:
- Job is an upright and righteous man
- Satan takes away Job’s stuff and his family
- God gives Satan permission to do more bad stuff to Job
- Job still doesn’t turn away from God even when his own wife suggests he abandon his faith
- Job sits in ashes and uses a pottery shard to scrape and scratch his skin where Satan has inflicted nasty painful infections
- Job affirms the good days he’s had in his life and lives up to his upright and righteous nature
- He even has 3 friends who sit with him, in silence, for 7 days, observing and being in the “swamp” of immense suffering that Job endures …oy!
Discussion
- How do we apply Job’s suffering to our own lives? We may be apt to accuse God when things go south.
- What is the purpose of blame and accusation? Is it helpful?
- Who do you hold accountable when shitty stuff happens in your life?
- What might be a healthier approach to “explaining our misery”?
- Share one current “unhelpful” self-talk statement that you use way too often. What is a replacement statement that encourages self-compassion, healthy role modeling and actionable change?
Meditation
Plant seeds within yourself, be kind to your future self. Have faith that the time will come when those seeds of kindness will grow bigger, stronger and more consistent…to the point of becoming a hard and fast value within yourself. Replace statements like, “Why does this crap always happen to me?” with actionable self-talk like, “Crap, this happened a couple weeks ago, I wonder what I can do to prevent it from happening again.” Stay curious, use actions and self-compassion to prevent stagnation and angry acceptance.
“Grant me the serenity to accept what I can’t change, the courage to change what I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
