Humility: leads to a more loving stance in the world through authenticity
What can humility tell us about eating scrolls that taste like honey but that may sour one’s stomach? Maybe be careful about what you eat? Ok, aside from that…
The second rung of the ladder of humility is to “love not one’s own will,” but instead, accept the will of God. Two rungs later is perseverance; keep climbing this ladder of relinquishing control, even when it doesn’t seem to make sense, and especially when things get difficult. Even when I’m told to eat paper.
What I appreciate about the ladder image for developing humility is that the lower rungs remain, even as we climb. We couldn’t have reached a higher rung without the lower rungs, and the lower rungs are necessary to keep the ladder stable. In other words, when I get to a difficult step on the ladder, I can always return to the knowing and lessons of the rungs below me. Ultimately, I can always return to the beginnings of knowing that God is God and I am not God. I can rest in faith and acceptance of the will of God.
