Some people think that you are only changing something for the forty days of lent, but I think it is a chance for you to work on yourself. It doesn’t matter if it is something as simple as wanting to drink water more often. That is something that you can try for the rest of your life, and it should be something that sticks with you. But, it is also enabling to give something up for the forty days, something like sweets or soda.

This lent I would like to work on better realizing when I am doing something subconsciously. Almost everybody can be petty, guilting and manipulative without even realizing it. Some situations I look back on and see that there could have been a change. It is actually something I have been thinking about for a while. When I start to find myself getting jealous, pitiful, or guilting, I just ask myself questions. Is this important? Am I doing this so I can feel better, or so everyone else can feel better? Does this make me a better person? Isn’t the overall goal to be a better person? That is what is important to me. Now, when I find myself in these situations, I just assess.

It’s a very long term goal, and it can’t be confined to just these 40 days, but should positively be stretched over my whole life. Helping people, appreciating life, and being content are my goals. I think everybody can work on something, even if it is as simple as drinking more water. Anything that makes you feel healthier, and like a better person can be a goal. I think it doesn’t matter on the goal you have, it is how you achieve it and how it makes you feel. Giving up sweets for 40 days would make you healthier, and feel like a better person, so that is a giant goal. The difficulty doesn’t matter, but a positive outcome is what matters.
